The Brazilian “Cuscuz” from the Northeast (called Cuscuz Nordestino) is a nutritious, cheap and really simple dish that the Portuguese colonizers brought to Brazil from North Africa (originally “Couscous”). It is a steamed dish made of corn flour that looks like a cake. To prepare it, a steamer is needed, the “Cuscuzeira”. Alternatively, Cuscuz can be cooked in a deep dish (Cuscuz no Prato). Cuscuz is an essential part of the typical Brazilian breakfast in the Northeast and is served at almost every meal. In some places it also serves as an alternative to bread. The coconut couscous is the sweet version of this recipe, enriched with coconut and sugar.
